Route Manipulation

BGP Hijacking is the most common form of route manipulation. The compromise of an existing edge router or configuration of a new one can lead to a BGP hijack attack. If the malicious BGP announcement contains a shorter route, or more specific route, then the victims traffic could be redirected to an attacker. Threat actors have been known to use unused BGP prefixes to avoid drawing attention from the legitimate user or organisation.
