2.3.6 Identify Azure Data Migration Options

Description of different Azure migration options.

Azure Migrate

Helps migrate from on-prem to cloud. Functions like a hub to help manage the assessment and migration of your on-prem datacenter to Azure. It provides:

  • Unified migration platform: single portal to start, run and track your Azure migration.

  • Range of tools: Includes; Azure Migrate - Discovery and Assessment, Azure Migrate - Server Migration. Also integrates with other Azure services and with ISV offerings.

  • Assessment and Migration: in Azure Migrate hub, you can assess and migrate on-prem infrastructure to Azure.

Integrated Tools

  • Azure Migrate - Discovery and Assessment: discover and assess on-prem servers running on VMWare, Hyper-V, and physical servers.

  • Azure Migrate - Server Migration: migrate VMWare, Hyper-V, physical servers and public cloud VMs to Azure.

  • Data Migration Assistant: assessment tool for SQL servers, identifies unsupported features, new features and the right path for migration.

  • Azure Database Migration Service: migrate on-prem databases to Azure VMs running SQL server, Azure SQL database, or SQL managed instances.

  • Azure App Service Migration Assistant: assess on-prem websites for migration to Azure App Service. Use to migrate .NET and PHP web apps to Azure.

  • Azure Data Box: move large amounts of offline data to Azure.

Azure Data Box

Helps transfer large amounts of data quickly, reliably and at low cost. A data box storage device with a capacity of 80 terabytes will be transported to and from your datacenter via a regional carrier. The data box will be protected with a rugged case. The device can be ordered via the Azure portal for import and export.

Once the data transfer is complete, simply return the data box. If data is being transferred to Azure, this will happen automatically when the data box is received by Microsoft.

Use Cases

Use cases for import:

  • One time migration: move a large amount of on-prem data to Azure.

  • Moving a media library from offline tapes to Azure to create an online media library.

  • Migrate a VM far, SQL server or applications to Auzre.

  • Move historical data to Azure for analysis.

  • Initial bulk transfer of data followed by incremental transfers.

  • Periodic uploads - move large amounts of generated data periodically to Azure.

Use cases for export:

  • Disaster recovery - restore a copy of data from Azure to on-prem.

  • Security requirements - export data out of Azure for government or security requirements.

  • Migrate back to to on-prem or another service provider.
